High Five- Gesture of celebration or greeting in which two people slap each other’s palms with their arms raised. It is a transfer of energy.
We must have seen in sports that teammates usually high five each other whenever they achieve something, individually or as a team. We must have also seen people generally high fiving when they achieve something in their objective or day-to-day lives. It’s been regarded as great physical way to communicate and to display positive feedback.
But why is it always a high five or a fist bump? What does it even do?
Studies have shown that it’s a positive reinforcement which releases dopamine when one gets a high five. It is also regarded as a great source of motivation and energy as it provides that sense of achievement validation and hunger for wanting more. High fives also help build a physical connection as well as strengthens relationships among people.
In short, to make someone’s day good, you can start with a small and quick high five to recognize their effort and contribution and bring a smile to their face. A small effort from your end can make a big impact on someone.
Wish I could high five myself. Would be then brimming with self-confidence!!
Yeah, by now you know where it’s heading. You can actually high five yourself and that is one underrated way to have confidence and energy throughout, that too without relying on any external source.
Start your day by high fiving yourself in the mirror. Might seem an awkward task, but its awkward only if you have criticized and put down yourself till now in front of the mirror. Mel Robbins in her book, The High Five Habit has talked about magic that this small habit creates.
One thing she focuses on is that the most important relationship you have is with yourself and becoming your own cheerleader will help in relationships with others. “If you’re insecure with yourself, you’ll be insecure with other people”.
A high five requires us to be present and there is an intention behind every high five.
So, when a person high fives themselves, they are grounding to that very moment. It affirms and fulfils our deepest need, which is to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
Just step in front of the mirror once and high five yourself, it’s very difficult to criticize yourself at that very moment. Also, apart from increasing your own confidence, high five anyone you meet and transfer some extra energy that you get in front of the mirror. HIGH FIVE!
